Happy Birthday: An Ode To A Brother Like No Other

There are some thoughts  I'm glad life never made me ponder It's the trajectory my life  Would have taken without you in it. You are a treasure  That fills our heart with so much delight  And cause our hearts to skip for joy. The seas that cover the ends of the earth  Cannot measure the happiness  that floods the navels of our souls. Your presence in this utopia  Fills a void no one can attempt. Cause your worth is immeasurable  And you are a priceless gift  that God designed to make this day whole. On this special day, Don't laugh at these skinny girls. Tell your fathers not to walk like a crab  Even though funny men cannot be trusted, You have earned our trust. Your creativity will continue to melt  the crust of the earth  Cause you melt our hearts in a manner The sun cannot replicate. You shape our lives with soothing words In a manner the stars will stare in envy. The stage is set and the dancers are ready. Let the d...

SHORT STORY: The Cold Coal

‘Hello beautiful, I want to take you out to lunch’ Doctor Adekunle tells his wife of 5 years. He soliloquises ‘How do I let my wife know…’ Mrs Adekunle responds tentatively ‘Darling, I am really surprised by this gesture… it’s been a week since you took me out I hope all is well? On getting to one of the most exquisite french restaurants on Admiralty way, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos, Nigeria, the skyline was lit with the beauty enhanced by the moon and the stars. The moment they stepped into ‘Le Chateau’, all Doctor Adekunle could do was to keep taking drinks at though his tummy is the storage unit for Nigeria Breweries. Burning Coles (Pt. 2) - Emmanuela Evbuoma

‘My leg my leg’ Seyi who now was sitting on the floor cried. ‘Oh my God’ Mrs Cole exclaimed as she saw the oil stain on her daughter’s sky blue jean trousers. She quickly turned off the gas cooker and helped Seyi remove her trouser as she called on top of her voice to Mr Cole, who was hearing all that was going on but showed no interest. Mr Cole staggered into the kitchen ‘what is it? Why you shouting my name like they are chasing you?’ he asked, obviously drunk. ‘Hot oil poured on your daughter’s thighs and that’s all you can say?’ she asked as she poured cool water on Seyi’s thighs. ‘So what do you now want me to do?’ he asked annoyingly ‘better take her to the hospital and don’t disturb me’ he said and turned around to leave. ‘Ha is that all you have to say?’ Mrs Cole was fed up of her husband’s lackadaisical attitude. She lifted Seyi up from the floor and supported her as they walked out of the kitchen to the main door. She shouted on top of her voice ‘Bimbo b...

Burning Coles ( Pt. 1) - Emmanuela Evbuoma

‘You must be out of your rotten mind’ Mr Cole shouted on top of his voice. ‘Me I’m not out of my mind o’ Mrs Cole replied holding tightly to his shirt, as she shook her body rhythmically ready to fight. ‘Have I asked too much? All I need is some money to take care of your children’ she told him almost shedding tears. ‘Hehehehehe’ he chuckled sarcastically ‘abi e ri obirin yi ni? (can’t you see this woman?),’ he clapped his hand in amazement. Then immediately, the sarcastic smile on his face turned into a frown ‘Woman, listen to me and listen well. You have no right to tell me what I am to do for my children. Is that clear?’ he shouted at her with alcohol filled breath oozing out of his mouth. ‘Don’t you have any shame Dare? Your children are in their rooms and can obviously hear you shouting at me’ she told him as she released his shirt from her hand. ‘There you go again, calling me shameless. Funke, I’m shameless  abi?  (right?)’ he asked, tapping his chest with...

I Am Still Single, Am Not Dead

It's that time of the year again, when a lot of people bow to the pressure that comes with being single at a time as this. Many have been blinded by the illusion that it is shaping up to be a curse to spend valentines day single. I strongly wonder why a lot of people are in a state of constant desperation and worry all because of a day that has been designated for the celebration of Love.  A lot of people have lost focus and let their guard down as a result of their impatience and failure to wait for the right person that will compliment them.  What I seem not to understand is why a lot of people feel pressured to have dates on valentines day.  As a matter of fact, this is supposed to be a day to celebrate the true definition of love.  It is appalling that the basis and significance  has been hijacked to promote and fulfil the lusts of the flesh. Rather than an occasion for husband and wives to rekindle their love for one another, Fiance and Fiancee t...

MOVIE REVIEW: ABEJOYE... The Kingmaker

I can never forget that night. The first time I came in contact with Mount Zion video packs.  It was a night I fondly remember like it was yesterday; it was in the middle of the night around 1998 that my mum had bought two movies titled  Attacks From Home  and  The Story Of My Life.   I was much younger when I watched my first Mount Zion movie. It  was probably around 1995 when   the movie Agb ara    Nla  was serialized on local stations probably across the nation.  There is no kid born in the late 80's or early 90's that will forget the scary nature of the serial when watching every night. Who will ever forget the depictions of the character of the devil and how he appeared at will? as well as the context as well as the overall application of the character of some of the really scary figure which painted a rich vein of vivid pictures of the operations of the world of darkness .  The imprint the movie had ...
