SHORT STORY: The Cold Coal

‘Hello beautiful, I want to take you out to lunch’ Doctor Adekunle tells his wife of 5 years. He soliloquises ‘How do I let my wife know…’
Mrs Adekunle responds tentatively ‘Darling, I am really surprised by this gesture… it’s been a week since you took me out I hope all is well? His husband kept mute and she couldn’t stand to get her husband mad so she simply told him ‘I’ll get ready in a bit’. She didn’t let her excitement cloud her judgment.

On getting to one of the most exquisite french restaurants on Admiralty way, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos, Nigeria, the skyline was lit with the beauty enhanced by the moon and the stars.
The air was full of freshness as young lovers came out to have a wonderful time in a city that never sleeps. The moment they stepped into ‘Le Chateau’, all Doctor Adekunle could do was to keep taking drinks at though his tummy is the storage unit for Nigeria Breweries. His wife was awestruck and embarrassed at the rate of her husband’s incessant drinking.
‘What is going on? Can you really tell me what exactly is on your mind’ dear, hope you are fine?’

Mrs Adekunle kept questioning with no response in sight. The anxiety she felt knew no bounds because she seemed to be on a blind date with a man who is not her husband, she has been exposed to a sight she had never beheld ever since she walked down the aisle and said I do to her husband five years ago. She was becoming jittery and her temper was going overboard. She has a medical condition which made her eat voraciously anytime she is feeling troubled. She decided to order a large bowl of salad and chicken.  When she couldn’t hold it any longer she began to express her anger towards her husband ‘You called me out here for lunch and yet you refused to mutter a meaningful utterance since we got here… what has gotten into you’

Dr Adekunle was left dumbfounded lacking a swift response to her probing. All he could tell his wife was for her to calm down and order a drink which she vehemently declined and in turn led to increase in the frequency of her anger. Then her husband decided to stop drinking and he ordered a small quantity of French rice with salad and chicken… while eating the meal, fear crept through his voice as he blotted out nine dreaded words ‘ My wife I am sorry, I cheated on you’. He further told wife how much the guilt of the act has been killing him for a while now and he felt he owed his wife that much to tell her the truth.

Mrs Adekunle flew out of her seat and made a wry smile and in turn responded to her husband’s revelation ‘ My darling husband, I am happy you told me this and I hope you will not be mad when I serve you divorce papers tomorrow’

Poetry:The Altar of Matrimony

I have waited,  I have really waited For many days and nights Through many sunrise and sunsets  That I have lost pace with. I have always wondered And found myself lost In the world of my thoughts I have been shamed I have been mocked I have been chided All because I chose To wait for you And dance to the rhythm That we have been instructed. This day Seemed never to arrive Out of impatience People have broken themselves Into different souls And meshed with different bodies. I am so proud I waited for you I am so proud I am not a coward For pinning values on you That I refuse myself. This night We will teach ourselves The rhythm of love And move at our own pace Tonight I see not used good But a beautiful treasure. I see not an art in a hurry to act but an art whose beauty ages  like a fine wine. Ton...
